Description

This print depicts the communal swimming pool of an apartment block at 1145 Larrabee Street, Hollywood, just north of Sunset Boulevard. This was the home of one of Hockney's friends, the art dealer and gallery owner Nick Wilder. Hockney lived there from summer 1966 until early 1967 whilst at the same time renting a decrepit studio in central Los Angeles. Hockney’s boyfriend, Peter Schlesinger, a 19-year old painter whom he had met while teaching at UCLA, is the naked figure climbing out of the pool.

The figure in the painting is based on a polaroid photograph Hockney took of Schlesinger standing up against the hood of his own MG car. Interviewed about the painting in 2012, Schlesinger laughed about it, saying "That’s why the part under the water isn't painted well—because it was just invented."

This reproduction print was lifted from the 2016 sumo publication of David Hockney's "A Bigger Book." The print is carefully hinge mounted with an archival 8-ply top mat, ready for framing.
