About this piece:
Known as “paesine” or landscape stones, these 60-million-year-old chunks of polished marble are Eocene limestone blocks, buried not very deeply under ground near riverbeds. Over millennia, water carrying iron and manganeseoxides trickled and filtered through the stone blocks gradually imbuing them with their magnificent colors and subtle shades. A master craftsman is needed to carve the block without destroying the fragile element. Careful polishing is used to bring out the brilliance and luminous nature of each piece. The French artist who hand cut and polished each of these pieces has now retired, and the few pieces that are left on the marketplace are for sale right here on Mr. Marin.
