Original ink drawing by Charles Amedee De Noe.

Measures 7" x 5.5" overall.

Fine condition overall. Some toning and chipping on the edges due to the age of the piece.

About this piece:

This original ink drawing comes from a collection of miniature sketches we found in the Paris flea markets. These pieces served as preparatory drawings for the newspapers and magazines they were to be published in. When a sketch was selected to be published, Noe would reproduce it on wood and pass it over to an engraver.

About the artist:

Charles Amedee de Noe (1818-1879) was a 19th-century French illustrator and cartoonist who was one of the most popular French cartoonists during his lifetime. Noe's cartoons satirized politics, social trends, travel, popular novels, and plays. In 1839, his work started to be published in newspapers like "Le Charivari," a publication where he worked for thirty years. In his lifetime, Noe produced well over 10,000 drawings. He was the first significant French comic artist, and his drawings paved the way for many artists to come.
