About the piece:

This original watercolor painting depicts a southeasterly view of the famed cathedral from across the Seine River. The Notre Dame Cathedral is considered to be one of the finest examples of French gothic architecture through its use of the rib vault, flying buttresses, and its expansive and colorful stained glass rose windows (as pictured on the left side this piece). Construction of the landmark began in the year 1163 and was mostly completed by 1260 (save some modifications in succeeding centuries). This painting depicts the cathedral before its structural fire in April of 2019, which collapsed the famed spire and disintegrated the roof. The destruction of the interior was prevented by its vaulted stone ceiling containing most of the debris. Thankfully the city has undergone extensive restoration of the historical landmark and is due to be fully restored and reopened to visitors by December 2024.

This piece is one from a series of paintings in our “Tour of Paris” collection, which takes the viewer on an artistic stroll through the city of love.
